Who We Are, What We Believe

OUR HISTORY

Camp Grove Baptist Church was established in 1897 by a group of worshippers in the area who had previously grew weary of walking and traveling by wagon from Kentucky and Bethel Baptist Church. The group began holding revival meetings not far from the church’s current location.

Eventually, the worshippers began holding camp meetings on the land where the church is located today. At that time, the land consisted of only a grove of trees, which led to the name Camp Grove.

A revivalist named Henry Vaughn eventually joined the worshippers who were gathering in the Camp Grove area. The first church building was constructed, and Rev. Henry Vaughn became the first pastor of Camp Grove Church.

Throughout its history, the Camp Grove church family persevered through significant challenges, including two church fires, one in 1905 and another in 1958. The 1958 fire destroyed much of the church’s interior, along with many of the congregation’s older church records.

Following Pastor Henry Vaughn, Rev. James Adams became the church’s second pastor. The third pastor was Rev. K. F. Logan. Under the leadership of Rev. K. F. Logan, the next church structure was built in 1980.

The church’s longest-serving pastor was the late Rev. Willie James Toomer, Pastor Emeritus. He served the Camp Grove congregation for 52 years, ministering alongside the late Assistant Pastor Rev. Bedford Luck.

Among the pastors who continued Camp Grove’s rich legacy of faith and service was the late Rev. Dr. Deleware Clark Jr., a beloved pastor whose ministry left a meaningful and lasting impression upon the congregation. His faithful service and devotion to Camp Grove remain a cherished part of the church’s history and spiritual heritage.

Following the passing of Rev. Dr. Clark, the Camp Grove congregation prayerfully elected Rev. Dr. John W.S. Howard to serve as pastor. For nearly a decade, Dr. Howard has continued to lead the church forward in ministry, building upon the foundation established by those who served before him. Under his leadership, Camp Grove remains committed to the vision to “Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Promote Christian Education, and Meet the Physical Needs of humanity.”

Throughout the generations, Camp Grove Baptist Church has remained a place of worship, perseverance, fellowship, and service. From those who laid its earliest foundations to those who faithfully carry the ministry forward today, Camp Grove’s history is a testimony to the faith, sacrifice, and dedication of its pastors, leaders, members, and families. As the church honors its past and embraces its present, it continues moving forward in faith, committed to serving God, the congregation, and the community for generations to come.

OUR CREED

We believe in one God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible is God’s inspired Word and our guide for faith and living. We believe salvation comes through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, baptism symbolizes new life, and the Church is called to worship God, serve others, pursue justice, and share the Gospel with love.
